Did JM Focused Fund beat a plain Nifty 500 index fund?
We ran the same monthly SIP on the same dates in JM Focused Fund and in Motilal Oswal Nifty 500 Index Fund (Direct plans) — every 3-year SIP that could start between Oct 2019 and Oct 2023, 49 in all. JM Focused Fund finished ahead in 35 of 49 (71%) — ahead in most of them. The median gap was +2.0 percentage points a year; the worst -5.7 (started Oct 2019), the best +9.7 (started May 2021).

XIRR of every 3-year monthly SIP, by the month it started. Gap = fund XIRR minus index fund XIRR, in percentage points a year.

| 3-year SIPs | 49 | 71% | +2.0 pp | -5.7 ppstarted Oct 2019 | +9.7 ppstarted May 2021 |

The index fund's NAV already includes its own expense ratio and tracking error, so this is what you would actually have earned. The comparison uses the Nifty 500 index fund we match to this category, which may differ from the fund's official benchmark, and it can only cover months where both funds have NAVs (Oct 2019 to Oct 2026). Only funds that still exist are compared; merged or closed funds, often the weaker ones, drop out of AMFI's list, which flatters active funds as a group (how this comparison works).
Every SIP this fund has ever allowed: rolling returns
We started a 5-year SIP in every month the Regular plan's history allows — 135 separate SIPs. The worst returned -5.3% a year (started Apr 2015), the median 12.6%, the best 26.3%; 2% of them lost money. That spread is the honest answer to “what return should I expect?” — not a single trailing number.

Daily NAVs published by AMFI (Association of Mutual Funds in India). We take the first NAV of each month as the SIP date and value units at the latest NAV. Updated monthly.
How these numbers are calculated
NAVs are AMFI's official daily NAVs (Growth option). Instalments fall on the first business day of each month; stamp duty (0.005%) and exit loads are ignored. Returns are XIRR on actual dates. Tax: 12.5% LTCG above ₹1.25 lakh on units held over a year, 20% STCG on the rest, and Section 112A grandfathering at the 31-Jan-2018 NAV for older units. Full method: methodology.
