Did SBI Focused Fund beat a plain Nifty 500 index fund?
We ran the same monthly SIP on the same dates in SBI Focused Fund and in Motilal Oswal Nifty 500 Index Fund (Direct plans) — every 3-year SIP that could start between Oct 2019 and Oct 2023, 49 in all. SBI Focused Fund finished ahead in 22 of 49 (45%) — roughly a coin toss. The median gap was -0.6 percentage points a year; the worst -7.4 (started Mar 2021), the best +9.4 (started Oct 2023).

XIRR of every 3-year monthly SIP, by the month it started. Gap = fund XIRR minus index fund XIRR, in percentage points a year.

The index fund's NAV already includes its own expense ratio and tracking error, so this is what you would actually have earned. The comparison uses the Nifty 500 index fund we match to this category, which may differ from the fund's official benchmark, and it can only cover months where both funds have NAVs (Oct 2019 to Oct 2026). Only funds that still exist are compared; merged or closed funds, often the weaker ones, drop out of AMFI's list, which flatters active funds as a group (how this comparison works).
Every SIP this fund has ever allowed: rolling returns
We started a 5-year SIP in every month the Regular plan's history allows — 187 separate SIPs. The worst returned 1.1% a year (started Apr 2015), the median 16.7%, the best 27.3%; none of them lost money. That spread is the honest answer to “what return should I expect?” — not a single trailing number.
