Did UTI Healthcare Fund beat a plain Nifty 50 index fund?

UTI Healthcare Fund finished ahead in 70 of 106 (66%) — ahead in most of them. The median gap was +3.5 percentage points a year; the worst -14.4 (started Jun 2014), the best +16.6 (started Oct 2021).

XIRR of every 5-year monthly SIP, by the month it started. Gap = fund XIRR minus index fund XIRR, in percentage points a year.
| Window | SIPs compared | Fund ahead | Median gap | Worst gap | Best gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-year SIPs | 130 | 58% | +3.8 pp | -20.7 ppstarted Jun 2015 | +24.7 ppstarted Oct 2017 |
| 5-year SIPs | 106 | 66% | +3.5 pp | -14.4 ppstarted Jun 2014 | +16.6 ppstarted Oct 2021 |
The index fund's NAV already includes its own expense ratio and tracking error, so this is what you would actually have earned. The comparison uses the Nifty 50 index fund we match to this category, which may differ from the fund's official benchmark, and it can only cover months where both funds have NAVs (Jan 2013 to Oct 2026). Only funds that still exist are compared; merged or closed funds, often the weaker ones, drop out of AMFI's list, which flatters active funds as a group (how this comparison works).
Every SIP this fund has ever allowed: rolling returns
We started a 5-year SIP in every month the Regular plan's history allows — 187 separate SIPs. The worst returned -5.2% a year (started Oct 2014), the median 18.1%, the best 31.4%; 7% of them lost money. That spread is the honest answer to “what return should I expect?” — not a single trailing number.
